"On one of my bespoke and very private guided tours of the South Island my client from Somerset in the UK wanted to get “close up and personal” with the locals. At my suggestion and to facilitate this ‘need’, among the accommodation I arranged I chose a recommended Air B&B operator. I arranged a beautiful farm stay for a night, a place where I believed my client would see true, rural NZ; and really meet a Local. Well he did meet a local, but on seeing the two handguns and large rifle securely locked and secured to the wall in our Hosts study, turned my clients face white in shock and him speechless. Farmers use these weapons for pest control and after considerable discussion and reassurance we went on to have a most enjoyable stay. Needless to say in our continuing email conversations, the sight of these guns hanging on the wall are still a fond memory for my client….a self-proclaimed ‘towny’ who came to see rural New Zealand…as only I could show him."
