"Now there is obviously many moments of bliss that stick out for me as a guide, as laughter and fun are the goal on most days. But there is always one memory that sticks with me deeply. I had a group of 11 and we were on the way back from Te Anau – Queenstown, I had remembered that the group was keen to get a photo of a paddock absolutely stacked out with sheep. I spotted one and pulled over to fulfill this request, but as they got out of the car one of the group saw a nest full of 11 geese eggs, it just so happened that this was the perfect number for the group to have one each in the morning. I didn't realise until they had the plastic bag out and were preparing to take off with this poor gooses eggs! Now after my time in China, I understand where they were coming from, as in a country as populated and competitive as China, if it's not someone else's, it's yours. If you don't take it someone else will, this is especially true for the older generation that grew up hungry without the luxury of most foods bar rice. But, I couldn't take it, I had to say something, so I mentioned politely that if the eggs got in the van then no one else was allowed in the van, this was taken with some sullen looks and it was a very quiet trip back to Queenstown. But, the next morning, whilst I was worrying if I had ruined 8 days of rapport, I picked the group up from there hotel. One by one they approached me and shook my hand and thanked me for not letting them take the eggs, they said that it was one of the most eye-opening moments from all their travels, the first time they saw how locals thought and felt whilst travelling in a country, the first time they felt they learned something about a different culture first hand and not through a story. I have since visited them in China and they still talk about that moment, it has also stuck with me ever since."
